Blue Apron’s Packaging & Innovation Team is responsible for the physical touch-point of the Blue Apron experience. The team tackles complex challenges across the organization and is made up of designers, engineers, researchers, food scientists, and strategists. We’re a lean, tight-knit, and empathetic bunch

As a key member of the Blue Apron’s Packaging Innovation team, the Packaging Engineer will lead the identification, development, testing, and implementation of innovative packaging. The Packaging Engineer will collaborate cross-functionally with multiple departments to understand requirements, capabilities, processes and leverage his/her background to deliver an exceptional product experience.




·       Facilitate the process of new packaging introduction or optimization of existing packaging

·       Design/engineer packaging materials based on an in-depth understanding of given manufacturing, quality, brand and design constraints

·       Own mission critical package testing to maintain the integrity of our product

·       Test packaging components and modify as necessary to meet functional parameters, cost targets, fulfillment, and shipping requirements

·       Lead the physical and analytical testing of packaging materials to validate package performance

·       Lead temperature testing to validate and qualify cold chain packaging systems

·       Support the packaging R&D function to address innovation and sustainability requirements

·       Collaborate with design and meal experience teams to develop realistic prototypes that can be engineered for speed to market

·       Create and engineer packaging designs that can be scaled up within given automation landscape

·       Provide manufacturing support during implementation of packaging changes, or commercialization activities

·       Create detailed engineering specs and drawings for procurement and internal QC purposes

·       Maintain and advance testing equipment and laboratory

·       Make recommendations, test theories, and build advanced visuals using large data sets

·       Organize and analyze complex data sets. Present findings in a clear, concise, visually pleasing manner to leadership team

·       Conduct packaging optimization testing to support the development and commercialization of future packaging

·       Identify CI opportunities in current-state packaging and processes




·       BS in Packaging or related engineering field

·       Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in package development required. Experience in food CPG strongly preferred

·       Detailed knowledge and experience in materials, equipment and product interface and interaction

·       Must be proficient in using CAD software’s – Artioscad, Autocad, Solidworks, etc.

·       Strong Excel and general analytical skills: knowledge of how to manipulate data and create insights from data

·       Ability to apply engineering principles and statistics to solve problems and make data-based decisions

·       Highly organized with the ability to multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced environment

·       Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with individuals at every level of the organization

·       Experience in sustainable packaging materials is a plus
